Organic abrasives are natural soft organic media. Compared with hard synthetic abrasives, they deliver mild cutting force and uniform friction without gouging soft workpieces. Their core functions include refining surface lines, uniform brightening and removing micro oxide layers, ideal for fine finishing at 320–600 grit for fine scratches. With porous structure, strong water absorption and poor high-temperature resistance, they tend to powder easily. Therefore, rotating speed, loading gap, polishing paste dosage and single-batch processing time exert significant impacts on performance. Proper operation ensures consistent brightening over long cycles; improper use leads to fast blackening, particle pulverization and failure. Organic abrasives are the key focus of consumable control in dry tumbling.
Not suitable for workpieces with deep coarse scratches of 80–240 grit. Organic abrasives have limited cutting force; forced processing will only crush abrasives rapidly. Forbid dry polishing without polishing paste, ultra-long continuous operation, overloaded tumbling with no tumbling space, and contamination from iron filings or coarse sand. Hard particles will destroy organic abrasive structure and cause rapid mass wear.
① Regular dust removal and sieving: During long-term use, organic abrasives accumulate metallic micro-powder and debris. Powder buildup increases friction and temperature and easily causes caking. Sieve fine powder and clean barrel deposits daily to keep abrasives loose and clean, extending service life by over 30%. ② Reasonable mixing of new and used abrasives: Full replacement at one time is not recommended. New abrasives are too slippery with weak brightening effect; over-powdered old abrasives trap contaminants. Mix new and used abrasives to maintain stable polishing strength and avoid one-time heavy consumable loss. ③ Machine shutdown for heat dissipation & intermittent operation: Stop the machine periodically for cooling during continuous mass production to prevent long-term high-temperature carbonization, blackening and failure, preserving abrasive toughness and stable friction performance. ④ Strict separation of wet and dry conditions; no water contact: Organic abrasives absorb moisture and swell, get moldy, agglomerate and decay. Once dampened, they are scrapped directly. Keep storage and production environment dry and ventilated, away from moisture, chemicals and water stains.
Workpiece degreasing & cleaning → Select organic abrasive with matched grit → Uniform priming of new abrasives with polishing paste → Load materials with standard compartment gap → Medium-low speed segmented tumbling → Periodic sieving, dust removal and paste replenishment → Recycle with mixed new & old abrasives → Dry and sealed storage
Recommended: Matching fine-scratch workpieces, medium-low constant speed, quantitative paste replenishment, standard gap, regular sieving, dry storage
Conditionally acceptable: Mix with a small amount of synthetic abrasives for ordinary structural parts to boost scratch removal efficiency Prohibited: Workpieces with deep heavy tool marks, high-speed dry polishing, overloaded tumbling, moisture exposure, no regular sieving
The wear rate of organic abrasives depends not on the material itself, but on standardized process control. Proper grit selection, regulated loading, precise paste proportioning and routine maintenance deliver high-quality finishes with uniform matte texture, scratch-free and blackening-free surfaces. Meanwhile, it significantly reduces abrasive replacement frequency and mass-production consumable costs, serving as a core control link for quality improvement and cost reduction in dry tumbling of precision hardware.
